Hello
Angels, Bosley, Mr. X and the Unamed One,
Well,
it took more than 24-hours to complete, but I think waiting for the Bass
Pro Shops MBNA 500 was well worth the wait.
For those of you who weren’t able to see it live (me included)
the VCR definitely came in handy.
I
think there was a little bit of everything for everyone.
Crashes, pit-road strategy, and definitely some great racing.
There was even drama all the way up to 10-laps to go.
I think the most significant thing to happen today was two-fold. One, Kevin Harvick losing second place in the points because
of a tangle with Dave Blaney. Harvick
finished 21st. The other
significant is Ryan Newman’s crash with 10-laps to go.
Newman can thank Dale Earnhardt Jr. for that while the duo was
racing for sixth place. Earnhardt
got into the back of Newman just enough to send the #12 Ford hard into
the wall, and out of the race. Newman
finished 29th, while Earnhardt went on to finish in that sixth spot. The most significant thing is Newman dropped two positions in
the Winston Cup Series point’s race.
Earnhardt jumped from third to second, while Harvick dropped from
second to third. In fact,
only 38 points separate Jeff Gordon, who is fifth in points and
Earnhardt.
Speaking
of Gordon, congratulations to him on his 18th back-to-back wins in his
Winston Cup career. Gordon
has been putting up some serious numbers as of late and has finished no
further back than fifth in the last six races.
Ok,
so where does that leave us in the mix…well, one more point of
business first.
I
have to award the Charlie’s Angels’ BONEHEAD Award again…and yes,
it’s to myself again. In
fact, I think I’m the only one who is going to get this stinking award
this year…can someone else do something bone-headed to take the
pressure off of me…. J
I
guess I should tell you what I did to earn it this week.
Well, Charlie (that’s me) decided to give Kris some advice on
her drivers. Unfortunately
I told her to keep a driver and yes, like the last time I earned the
BONEHEAD award, that driver wasn’t entered into the race.
This time it seriously affected Kris’ outcome instead of my
own. So, for this, I bestow the CHARLIE’S ANGELS BONEHEAD AWARD
to myself…hopefully for the last time this year.
Kris,
unfortunately for you, having one driver short in the field will always
award you the much-hated GOLDEN CABOOSE AWARD.
I obviously wasn’t paying too much attention to Mike Skinner
and the Army’s #01 Pontiac Grand Prix.
I read that Joe Nemachek was transferring to the car, but
didn’t’ realize that it was so soon.
Skinner is transferring to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series and
will not race the rest of the season.
This is really unfortunate for you considering the rest of your
drivers didn’t do too badly…save Terry Labonte.
This was the other driver who you traded for on my advice.
He was doing well until the three-quarter mark of the race when
he had a radiator go bad and went seven-laps down, finishing the race in
33rd. Other than that, your
remaining three drivers, Earnhardt, Bill Elliott and Gordon, finished
sixth, fifth and first. If
you choose to accept my advice in the future, I promise to not lead you
astray. Better luck next
week.
Mr.
X, again you were saved by someone else’s misfortune on the track. Unlike this week though, you deserve the Golden Caboose
Award…but didn’t earn it. I’ll
start with your best driver…Jeremy Mayfield who overcame being a
lap-down and finished comfortably in seventh place.
He was the only one who was comfortable after today’s finish
because your remaining drivers didn’t top the 29th finishing position. In that position is Newman and his crash, followed not so
closely by Ricky Rudd who crashed and got stuck in the rain soaked
grass. He finished 31st. Greg Biffle had some problems after he struck the wall and
finished 34th, while Mark Martin blew an engine early in the race and
finished 39th. Your average
finish is a horrible 28 even. Much
better luck next week.
Unamed
One, if it wasn’t for Matt Kenseth and Dale Jarrett finishing 11th and
12th, you would’ve been in the same boat as Mr. X.
This is because you share your last three drivers with Mr. X.
Newman didn’t deserve to finish 29th, but that is exactly where
he ended up. Rudd and
Biffle definitely didn’t help you either with their 31st and 34th
place finishes either. Your
average finish today is a not-so-good 23.4.
Much better luck next week also.
Bosley,
you shouldn’t be too happy right now either.
Your drivers were also pitiful, save Kurt Busch, who overcame a
speeding-during-yellow-flag penalty and some damage from contact on the
racetrack to finish eighth. Rusty
Wallace finished a lap down in 19th, while Robby Gordon finished 21st.
I’ve already mention Newman and how he ended up 29th, while
Michael Waltrip blew up shortly after Martin did and finished 38th.
Your average finish is also a not-so-good 23 even.
Much better luck next week.
Tiffany,
Martin definitely hurt you this week with his engine failure and 39th
place finish. John Andretti
didn’t hurt you too badly though with his 22nd place finish.
Harvick was a little upset to say the least with his 20th place
finish, while Earnhardt and Johnson were happy with their sixth and
third place finishes respectively.
Your average finish is a not so bad, 18 even.
Better luck next week.
Kelly,
you had two drivers finish in the 30s today.
In the 33rd place is Labonte and his 33rd place finish, while in
31st is Rudd and his Air Force car.
Nemachek didn’t have a bad debut in the Army car with his 10th
place finish, while Bobby Labonte had an outstanding day finishing
fifth. One of the great
battles of the race came when Bobby Labonte and race winner Jeff Gordon
battled for the lead position. Gordon
won that race and the overall race too. Your average finish is a not so bad 16 even.
Jill,
while your string of outstanding finishes comes to an end, you’re
drivers still didn’t do too badly today.
Well, I did say today…This is because Brian Vickers in his
first Winston Cup start for the #25 Delphi Chevrolet (Vickers took
Nemachek’s spot for Hendrick Motor Sports) finished the day yesterday
very early, blowing the motor up in less than 33 laps…just before the
big rain came down to delay the race to today. He finished 43rd. As
for today’s drivers, your worst driver is Newman and his 29th.
Other than that, you’re remaining drivers (Jeff Gordon, Stewart
and Johnson) finished first, second and third.
You’re average finish this week is still a good 15.6.
nice job.
Regardless
of my bad advice to Kris, I also picked Terry Labonte to be on my team
this week. This didn’t
exactly backfire for me, but didn’t exactly work in my favor either.
He finished 33rd, nine laps down.
Andretti was adequate again, finishing 21st, while Matt Kenseth
dodged a bullet with is involvement in an early crash, finishing 11th.
Jeff Gordon and Johnson almost finished first and second, but
rather finished first and third today.
My average BONEHEAD winning finish is an even 14.
Sabrina,
that leaves you to be our CHARLIE’S ANGELS’ FANTASY LEAVE TOP-ANGEL
AWARD WINNER because all of your drivers finished 26th or better. In
that 26th spot is Ken Schrader with Robby Gordon finishing in front of
him in the 21th spot. Your
remaining three drivers, Earnhardt, Johnson and Stewart, finished sixth,
third and second respectively. Congratulations
on your TAA winning average finish of 11.6
Our
teams combined average finish this week is 15.84.
Here’s
how we line up after last week’s Subway 500 at Martinsville Motor
Speedway.
Next
week’s race is the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International
Raceway. It’s a 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time start because of the West
Coast location. The race
locks on Thursday at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
Don’t forget to update your drivers.
Good
luck next week Angels,
Charlie
